Japanese on the front:「 男の一本釣」
Translation: A man's single-line fishing.
"Ipponzuri" is a traditional and highly visual method of catching bonito. Instead of using nets, fishermen use a single rod each, skillfully and powerfully "flipping" heavy bonito onto the deck one by one as schools of fish appear. It's a romance unique to men.

Cultural Tidbit
Compared to net fishing, ipponzuri prevents bonito from struggling and getting injured in the net, so the fish meat is less bruised and has a firmer, more delicious texture. The fishermen's skill is so superb that they can catch a fish in just 3 seconds.Kochi Prefecture is a representative area for this technique. "Hatsugatsuo" (first bonito) in spring and summer has less fat and a firm texture, while "Modorigatsuo" (returning bonito) in autumn is rich in fat.
Kochi Prefecture is known as the "Bonito Kingdom," and traditional ipponzuri is regarded as a fishing culture full of strength and passion.
